The Black Phone Horror
Derrickson's locked-room horror holds up well even without a follow-up. Taking place in 1978 Denver, a series of kidnappings has left the local kids on edge. Once Finney is taken by the villain and held captive in a cellar, he dreads a fatal end. Yet the old telephone mounted nearby continues to ring, with ghostly voices giving advice, and the prophetic visions of his sister Gwen may be his salvation. An effective horror. This Dramatic Portrait
In the conflict between spirituality and money, the victory is clear for greed in this director's delightfully tacky film adaptation of the disgraced TV preacher plus her lawbreaking partner. Garfield acts as the venal Jim, who declares initially, “God does not want us to be poor,”. He and Tammy Faye commence profiting from the nation's spiritual convictions. It's a spectacle of poor styling, overdone appearance and hypocrisy, though the lead actress manages to present Tammy Faye as a sympathetic figure. Tuesday 14 October, 1.15am, the Film4 channel

The two stars excel of deadpan cool, so a delicious mind game of truth or lie takes place. Additional actors take part the smart espionage amusement.
