Fresh analysis suggests that people who discontinue popular weight-loss injections like Mounjaro or Wegovy can put back on lost weight far faster than those who halt conventional lifestyle plans.
Findings released in a leading medical journal demonstrates that while overweight people frequently drop about a fifth of their body weight while using the jabs, the weight is regained at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.
"Users buying these treatments must be cognizant of the potential of rapid weight regain when the therapy concludes," warns researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of regain implies a reversion to pre-treatment mass within about a year and a half.
Comparing Approaches
The research, which examined 37 of studies involving thousands of participants, compared the results of these new drugs with conventional dieting.
The team note that people who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone typically see a less rapid weight regain—perhaps 100 grams monthly—after stopping.
Explaining the Rapid Rebound
Nutrition scientists suggest the mode of action of the injections accounts for the amplified weight return.
These medications mimic a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which helps regulate hunger.
"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 levels far above than normal might result in the system to produce less of its own natural hormone, and may also lessen responsiveness to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.
"Stopping of this hormone supplement results in hunger is unsuppressed, making overeating far more likely."
An Ongoing Condition?
The NHS recommend the jabs for people with weight-linked health risks, alongside prescribed lifestyle changes.
A number of clinicians contend that, due to the significant potential of relapse, the therapy should be considered long-term.
This view is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the findings "emphasize the long-term character of obesity," comparing it to managing diseases like hypertension.
User Accounts
Users who have come off the jabs report a powerful return of appetite.
"It felt as if a switch flipping and you're instantly starving," said an individual.
This difficulty is worsened if patients have not adopted sustainable dietary or behavioural changes during treatment.
Significant Adoption
Figures suggest that millions of people in the UK have tried these injections in the last 12 months, with desire remaining high.
- Use is more common among females compared to males.
- The middle-aged age group shows the greatest level of interest.
- Many access the medications through private healthcare rather than public health services.
Ultimately, experts stress that while GLP-1 drugs are potent tools for shedding pounds, they are not a magic cure and lasting health benefits hinges on ongoing lifestyle support.
